Introduction
The name
The Van der Maarel name was written in different ways in the course of the past centuries:
- Van der Maarel
- Van der Marel
- Van der Maerel
- Van der Maerle
- Van der Maarle
- Van der Maarl
As far as I know, at the moment only the names Van der Maarel, Van der Marel and Van der Maarl are used.
The crest
There is a crest for the Van der Marel family from Wateringen.

The full description of the crest for the Van der Marel's from Wateringen is as follows:
3 merels van sabel (gerangschikt 2, 1) op een schild van goud. Een half aanziende traliehelm met wrong en dekkleden van sabel en goud. Helmteken: een gesloten vlucht en een merel van sabel (= zwart). Op het lint: "16 Jan Cornelis van der Marel 41".
Translation:
3 blackbirds sable (ranked 2, 1) on a shield of gold. A half lattice aanziende helmet with wreath and mantle of sable and gold. Crest: a closed flight and a blackbird sable (= black). On the ribbon: "16 Jan Cornelis van der Marel 41".
This crest hung in the Wateringen church till the French period, when it was banned. (From: "Geschiedenis van het geslacht Van der Marel", by Arie van der Marel.)
The crest may be used by the descendants of Jan Cornelis van der Marel. I am not one of them. I decend from his cousin: Cornelis Roelandsz van der Marel (ca. 1615 - ca. 1680).
I don't know where the original crest is now. To hang up a crest in a chrurch was an old tradition. This is what happend in 1641 (Wateringen church).During the French period crests were removed form churches and returned to their families because of the slogan 'Liberty, equality, fraternity (brotherhood)'. Our crest came in the hands of the descendants of Pouwels, brother of Jan Cornelisz, in Katwijk aan Zee.
Order of owners of the family crest:

- The Wateringen church
- Catharina van der Lee, widow of Jan Cornelisz van der Marel
